SA Series Turning Tools
These tools represent a completely new and unique concept in wood turning. They were designed to easily make a repeatable cutting action for all hollowing needs. They work well down the insides of all bowls, including open and closed bowls. They do not work well on the bottom of bowls to the center; we would recommend using a scraper, gouge, or our SRB with a cove bit for that application.
The tools are built from a 1/2 inch stainless steel bar stock for the SA35 and the SA45, and a 3/4 inch bar stock for the SAMega. This gives all three tools a flat bottom to lay on the tool rest, which greatly resists turning of the tool in the direction of the turning bowl during the cutting process. They all use a round carbide insert that can be rotated as needed to present a sharper edge when the tool eventually begins to dull. The insert sizes available are 12mm, 10mm, and 6mm for the SA45 and the SAMega tools. The SA35 is only available with a 12mm insert. The cutter (insert), like all of our carbide inserts resist wear many times over, (25-100xs) as compared to high speed steel. Eventually they will need to be replaced at a reasonable cost.
The tools cutting edge are angled at 35 degrees on the SR35 and 45 degrees on the SA45 and SAMega tools. These angles represent the optimum cut angle for the cutter to make a very nice cut on the wood. Long curls will come off the bowl. The 35 is slightly more aggressive and takes off a bit more wood. The 35 and 45 are 8 inches beyond the handle and work well for most turner's needs. We have found a very slight 5 or 10 degree downward angle of attack over the tool rest may work slightly better.
All tools are mounted in our 17 inch ash handle or come unhandled, however you prefer. All tools are machined with a 1/2 inch tang but the Mega is available in 3/4 inch tang to fit a standard arm brace handle or is available unhandled with a 1/2 inch tang.
They all take a very short time to perfect and we believe they represent the next generation of turning tools.
